PVD Gold Plating vs Electroplating: Why One Lasts Years
PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) vaporises gold in a vacuum so it bonds to the base metal at molecular level. Electroplating deposits gold from a chemical bath as a softer surface layer. PVD coatings are markedly harder, thicker and more resistant to water and abrasion.
How each process works
Standard electroplating
The item is submerged in a solution containing gold ions and an electric current draws those ions onto its surface. It is fast, inexpensive, and produces a layer that sits on the base metal rather than integrating with it. Because the bond is comparatively weak, abrasion at contact points — clasps, the inside of a hoop, the back of a stud — wears it through first.
PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition)
The item goes into a vacuum chamber. Gold is vaporised into a plasma and the vapour condenses onto the surface, with particles arriving at high enough energy to embed into the substrate. The result is a denser, harder coating that behaves more like a modified surface than an added layer. The same process is used for surgical instruments and cutting tools, where coating failure is not an option.

Why the base metal still matters
PVD is not a rescue for a bad substrate. Applied over brass, a PVD coating will still eventually wear at high-friction points, and once it does, the copper underneath behaves exactly as copper does. The durable combination is a good coating over a good base: PVD gold over 316L stainless steel. Either one alone is only half the answer.

Is PVD plating better than gold vermeil?
They optimise for different things. Vermeil guarantees a minimum gold thickness over sterling silver, which is a real quality standard, but sterling contains copper and can still oxidise. PVD over stainless steel is more durable in water and daily wear.
Does PVD plating wear off?
Eventually, at high-friction contact points, as any coating will. It takes years of daily wear rather than weeks, and there is no reactive copper underneath when it does.
