What Does “18K Gold Plated” Actually Mean?
18K gold plated means the surface layer is 75% pure gold. It describes purity, not quantity — a piece can be 18K plated and still have almost no gold on it. Thickness, measured in microns, determines how long the finish lasts.
Karat and thickness are different measurements
Karat is a ratio: 18K is 18 parts gold in 24, or 75% pure. It tells you the colour and quality of the gold in the layer. It says nothing about how thick that layer is.
Two pieces can both be honestly described as 18K gold plated while one lasts a month and the other lasts five years. The difference is thickness and bonding method, neither of which most listings disclose.
The terminology, ranked by gold content
| Term | What it means | Relative durability |
|---|---|---|
| Gold flash or gold wash | Extremely thin deposit | Lowest |
| Gold plated | Standard electroplated layer | Low to moderate |
| Micro gold plated | Marketing term; thickness usually unstated | Unverifiable |
| Gold vermeil | Regulated in some markets: minimum thickness over sterling silver | Good |
| PVD gold plated | Vacuum-bonded, dense, hard-wearing | High |
| Solid gold | Gold throughout | Highest |
Why plated jewellery is not hallmarked
Hallmarking in India applies to solid precious metal, certifying purity throughout the item. Plated jewellery is not hallmarked because the item is not made of gold — it carries a gold surface. The absence of a hallmark on demi-fine jewellery is expected, not a red flag.

Frequently asked questions
Is gold plated jewellery real gold?
The surface layer is real gold. The item is not solid gold, which is why it costs a fraction as much.
Is 18K gold plated good?
The karat is good — 75% pure. Whether the piece is good depends on plating thickness, bonding method and base metal, none of which the karat tells you.
Does gold plated jewellery have a hallmark?
No. Hallmarking certifies solid precious metal. Plated items are not hallmarked, and should not be expected to be.
Does gold plated jewellery have resale value?
Effectively none. The recoverable gold is measured in microns. Buy it to wear, not to hold value.
