Why Gold Plated Jewellery Fades — and How to Slow It Down

Gold plating fades through physical abrasion and chemical exposure, not through age. Friction at contact points wears the layer thin, while perfume, sanitiser and chlorine attack it chemically. Jewellery kept in a drawer does not fade; jewellery worn carelessly does.

The five causes, ranked

  1. Abrasion at contact points. The single largest cause. Clasps, the inside of rings and bangles, and pieces rubbing together in storage.
  2. Alcohol-based products. Perfume, hairspray, hand sanitiser. Applied over jewellery, they dissolve surface finish over time.
  3. Chlorine. Aggressive on plating with repeated long exposure. Occasional swimming is fine; daily pool use is not.
  4. Abrasive cleaning. Silver dips, polishing compounds and toothpaste physically remove plating. The fastest way to destroy a plated piece.
  5. Skin chemistry. A genuine but minor factor. Some people's sweat is more acidic, which slightly accelerates wear.

What actually slows it

  • Last on, first off — jewellery goes on after cosmetics and comes off before anything physical.
  • Store pieces separately, not loose together in one pouch.
  • Rotate what you wear so the same contact points are not stressed daily.
  • Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Nothing abrasive, ever — see the safe cleaning method.

Frequently asked questions

Why does gold plated jewellery turn black?

Blackening is usually the base metal oxidising after the plating has worn through, or a reaction with sulphur compounds in air and cosmetics.

Can gold plated jewellery be replated?

Yes, most jewellers can replate. Whether it is worth the cost depends on the piece — at demi-fine prices, replating often costs a meaningful share of the original.

Does anti-tarnish jewellery fade?

It will not tarnish, but the plating can still wear through by abrasion. Tarnish and abrasion are different failure modes.

Does jewellery fade faster in summer?

Somewhat — more sweat and more sunscreen mean more chemical exposure. The fix is rinsing after heavy sweat, not avoiding wear.
