Gold plated pendant set stored in House of Zena packaging — Anti-Tarnish Waterproof Jewellery | House of Zena

How to Store Jewellery So It Actually Lasts

Store jewellery dry, separated and out of direct sunlight. Most visible damage is scratching from pieces rubbing together in a shared pouch — not tarnish. Individual soft pouches or a lined box with compartments prevent nearly all of it.

The rules

  • Separate every piece. Metal scratches metal. This is the single highest-impact change.
  • Store dry. Let pieces air-dry after wear before putting them away.
  • Keep out of sunlight and heat. Both degrade enamel and adhesives over time.
  • Hang chains, do not coil them. Coiled chains tangle and kink permanently.
  • Bathrooms are the worst place. Humidity is constant. Store jewellery in a bedroom instead.

What works, at any budget

Approach Cost Good for
Individual soft pouches Very low Everything; best value by far
Compartmented lined box Moderate Daily-access collections
Hanging organiser Low Chains and long necklaces
Anti-tarnish strips Low Sterling silver — unnecessary for stainless steel
Original brand box Free Occasion pieces worn rarely

If your pieces are stainless steel based, you do not need anti-tarnish strips or airtight storage. The alloy handles that. You still need separation, because scratching is a mechanical problem no material solves.

Frequently asked questions

Should jewellery be stored in airtight bags?

Helpful for sterling silver, which oxidises in air. Unnecessary for stainless steel. Never seal anything away damp.

Can I keep jewellery in the bathroom?

Best avoided. Constant humidity is the worst environment, particularly for silver and enamel.

How do I stop necklaces tangling?

Hang them, or fasten the clasp and lay each flat in its own pouch. Tangling happens to loose, coiled chains.
