Ornate gold plated brooch for securing a saree pallu — Anti-Tarnish Waterproof Jewellery | House of Zena

How to Wear a Saree Brooch or Pin

A saree brooch secures the pallu at the left shoulder, where the drape falls. Pin through the pallu and the blouse shoulder seam together, angling downward so the weight of the fabric pulls against the pin rather than tearing away from it.

How to pin it

  1. Drape and pleat the pallu as normal and settle it on the left shoulder.
  2. Lift the pallu slightly to find the blouse shoulder seam — the strongest anchor point.
  3. Pin through both layers, catching the seam. Angle the pin downward.
  4. Check the drape falls naturally. If it pulls, reposition rather than tightening.

Protecting delicate fabric

  • On chiffon, georgette and fine silk, pin through the seam rather than open fabric.
  • Choose a brooch with a smooth, fine pin. Thick pins leave visible holes.
  • For very delicate sarees, pin a small piece of fabric behind as backing.
  • Never pin through zari or embroidery — the threads will pull.

Beyond the saree

Brooches work on blazer lapels, on a dupatta at the shoulder, gathered at a scarf, or clustered — two or three small ones together read as more considered than one large piece. See brooches and lapel pins.

Frequently asked questions

Which side does a saree brooch go on?

The left shoulder, where the pallu falls, for most standard drapes.

Will a brooch damage my saree?

Not if pinned through the blouse seam with a fine pin. Avoid pinning through zari or embroidery.

Can I wear a brooch with western clothes?

Yes — blazer lapels, coat collars and knitwear all work well.
